- Complete the 2nd ending of the The Missing Artist quest to find a Black Sketchbook.
- Use the sketchbook while in Southside.
Outline
Note that many of these activities have to be done in this order, but some do not, so there is some flexibility if the choice encounters come up in a different order than those presented here.
- In The Black Book, Look for a view in the crates to gain a collection of his own limbs.
- look for other crate arrangements to stack them into a pyramid.
- Search for an image from atop the crates to unlock the Against the Bugs encounter.
- See what happens when the fighting against the bugs to gain a jar of acid.
- See if hero cuts the meat on a chain with the acid to gain a a long hooked chain.
- See if he lowers himself to the fire to get to the Fires of the Black Book.
- Search for him taking a skull from the wall of skulls to get a human skull.
- See if he gathers fire from the lake of fire to turn your skull into a blazing skull.
- Feed the Ghoulish Trio from the collection of your limbs to learn the ghoulish language.
- Break through the wall of skulls to unlock the mushroom forest.
- Gather a bag of mushrooms from the mushroom forest.
- Eat some mushrooms in the mushroom forest to determine whether they make you grow bigger or smaller.
- Duck into the tunnels to get to the Tunnels of the Black Book.
- At the The Dead End, tear down the wall if the mushrooms made you grow bigger, or sneak through if they made you grow smaller.
- Adventure through enough Forked Intersection by choosing correct paths (many or boredom). One can guess or get the outcomes from Seeing if he plays with the bones if one knows the ghoul language. (6 correct paths necessary - always?)
- Make a decision at the Towering Figure. This ends the quest one way or another if you have the necessary items.
- Additionally while in the Tunnels of the Black Book you can do the following at the Gravestone
- Write in a (normal) Name; pay your respect and dig up the grave for a Revolver AND/OR
- Write in a ghoul name and pay your respects for a rose bud, then See if he'll approach the ghouls.

The second part of quest description depends on which items the hero has found. It always begins with:
The hero wears a long coat and a hat tipped over his blank face.
If you have found only one item, it continues:
In one hand he eternally carries [an item].
If you have found exactly two items, it continues:
In every picture he carries [an item] and [an item].
If you have found multiple items, it continues:
In every picture he carries the same bizarre array of objects, including stuff like [list of items]
Possible carried objects includes:
- a jar of acid
- a long hooked chain
- a collection of his own limbs
- a human skull/a blazing skull
- a bag of mushrooms
- a battered pistol
- a grisly crown of teeth
- a rose bud/a dark rose
The last part is unchanging:
You'll probably want to find somewhere comfortable to rest and go through it. It's not something you can really manage while you're wandering around.
