You poke your head into Room 16. If you didn't know it was an engineering lab you could just as easily guess it's a chem lab or room to make sculptures.

Whoever uses it seem to be pretty good at cleaning up after themselves; a few bits of wire and beads of polysteel are the only sign of their work. If there's anything interesting, it's probably in these lockers off to the side.

Try random combinations

You pick a locker at random and try the obvious codes on it. One two three four five, five four three two one, all of those. Unfortunately, whoever uses it seems to be too clever for that.

And then, one of:

Someone's left a mess of electronics components at the bottom, but most of it seems rightfully abandoned. You salvage what you can from their mess.

You found: frayed cable or optical sensor

There's a lonely pile of polysteel at the bottom of the locker, looks like leftovers from some project… probably long-forgotten, not that you need much justification to take it after you learned their combination.

You found: polysteel

Or, after getting the above three results:

You pick a locker at random and try the obvious codes on it. One two three four five, five four three two one, all of those. Sadly, it pops right open.

Try one you found

You try the combination on each locker in turn until one pops open. It looks like someone's prepping to shape some polysteel, with a torch sitting on top of the granulated white plastic.

Polysteel is certainly common enough, used to make everything from clothing to prefabricated houses, but the torches to shape it are more expensive and broadly useful. No reason not to grab both, though.

You found: 4-5 handfuls of polysteel

You try the combination on each locker in turn until one pops open. It's filled with a half-completed gadget of some sort. You're not really sure what it's supposed to have done, but you manage to extract some useful parts out of it… admittedly, "useful" might be stretching it for some of them.

You found: 0-2 optical sensors

You found: thick cabling

You found: microcapacitor

You try the combination on each locker in turn until one pops open. It looks like you've found someone's hoard of polysteel.

You sweep it out into a bag for later. Who knows when raw polysteel will come in handy?
