How these values are calculated

Warning!

Things to watch out for:

XP

  • Kill an opponent to determine its XP value. Some opponents (Stone, Shard, the Mask, etc.) only appear with companions so it would probably best to kill just that opponent and run from the fight to see only that opponent's XP. Note that some combat encounters can give extra XP too, win or lose.
  • Be sure to watch out if you have any bonus XP granting items, and note that some adventures (particularly in The Charnel House) give bonus XP for the encounter, whether or not you actually kill the opponent(s).

HP

  • If you do at least x damage to an opponent and it doesn't die (possibly over multiple rounds), then their HP is at least x+1; mark x+1 as the lower bounds of the HP column.
  • If you do at least x damage to an opponent and it dies (possible over multiple rounds), then their HP is at most x; mark x as the higher bounds in the HP column.
  • Note that the opponent will stop acting in combat as soon as their HP goes below zero. So if the opponent attacks over three passes (ie. sub-rounds) and then you kill it, it must have been still alive after the first two passes.

Attributes (Perception, etc.)

  • Perception can be tested for by using the Dirty Pool technique:
    • If your opponent "sees through your ruse" with x buffed Reflexes, then your opponent's Perception is x or larger; mark x as the lower bounds in the Perception column
    • If you distract your opponent "with some sleight of hand" with x buffed Reflexes, then your opponent's Perception is x-1 or smaller; mark x-1 as the upper bounds in the Perception column.
  • Reflexes can be tested for by running away (see page for details); If you start with very low reflexes and slowly raise them, the moment your can start successfully running away, their reflexes are the same as yours. Eg. if, at 3 reflexes, you can never run away, but at 4 reflexes you can occasionally run away, your opponent has 4 reflexes. Be sure to do enough tests to be reasonably sure that you really can't run away at 3 though.
  • Various techniques have bonus forms when comparing attributes, including:

† Almost all these techniques are enhanced if [Your attribute > Opponent's attribute], except for Stream of Needles with a safety needler which uses ≥ instead.

  • Other attributes can be calculated using combat damage ranges (see below).

Defense

  • If you reduce one of your stats to 0, you will always do your base damage plus attack bonuses if you use that technique; opponent's defense reduces this amount of damage by their defense.
    • Example: Testing Ranged Damage: Reduce your Perception to 0 with various equipment or debuffs. Using a Single Shot (2 base damage) with a Cheap Pistol (+2 Ranged Power) will deal 4 ranged damage consistently. If an opponent takes 4 damage from you, they have no ranged defense; if they take 3 damage, they have 1 ranged defense.
    • Note that these value can be negative. If, in the above example, your opponent takes 5 damage from your single shot, they have -1 defense.
  • Fire defense is easily tested with dynamite technique since it doesn't use any stat. It will always do 10 + [Fire Power] - [opponent Fire Defense] damage. [thanks to Mag for suggesting this]

Attack Power

  • Damage in combat is calculated as a random number between:

Minimum = Attacker's Power - Defender's Defense
Maximum = Power + MIN(Power - Defense, Relevant Attribute) - Defense

  • Using this formulas it is possible to calculate your opponent's attack bonuses. You must run enough combats to be certain of the range of damage that an opponent's technique can deal. The total Power is the base damage of the technique plus any attack bonus damage; this means that if the opponent is using a technique of a known base damage, you can subtract the base damage from the minimum damage done to calculate the bonus damage.
    • Example: If an opponent consistently punches you for anywhere between 2 and 4 damage, they have 0 +Melee Bonus because Minimum damage (2) - Base damage for punch (2) = Bonus Damage (0).
  • Opponent's attributes can also be calculated with this formula, if you use the maximum from the damage range (as long as the attribute is less than the attack power).
  • Don't forget to subtract off your defense. Note that defense can't reduce damage below 1 - if you have +30 melee defense, an opponent could be dealing 2 or 30 melee damage and you have no way of telling them apart - they still only do 1 damage in the end.
  • Alternatively, Bullet for Ginn, Bullet for Surt, and Bullet for Ymir can be used to test opponents' etheric power, melee power, and stealth power if they use a technique of that type.
